Patient Information
Background Information
Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is an internationally recognized surgical specialty. Oral & Maxillofacial surgeons treat a wide spectrum of diseases including injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. An additional four years of hospital based surgical and anesthesia training after graduation from dental school is required for this certification.
WHY HAS YOUR DOCTOR REFERRED YOU TO US?
Patients are referred by their family dentist to an OMS when the dentist has determined that it is in the best interest of their patient to do so. This reflects strongly on the high ethical standards of your dentist and shows a strong commitment to you by your dentist. We have made a commitment to work with your family dentist to provide you with the highest quality care possible. We recognize the importance of good communication between doctors. We make every effort to insure that your dentist remains informed of your treatment at all times. Often treatment plans require close consultation and planning with your dentist.

Dr. Young has privileges to admit patients to local hospitals here in Modesto (Memorial Medical Center and Doctors Hospital). Dr. Young can admit patients to these hospitals for those certain health conditions or surgeries that require such care. Because Dr. Young has a combined medical and dental background he is able to manage complex medical problems and surgical cases. He also actively participates on the emergency department facial trauma call panel at both hospitals.
Dr. Young also has had extensive training in outpatient anesthesia techniques that allow him to safely provide IV sedation or general anesthesia as necessary. Your comfort and safety is a top priority, so we offer these services in a relaxed and comfortable environment.
Perhaps most importantly, doctors refer their patients to Dr. Young because of their confidence in his extensive training and the high quality, sensitive care he provides to his patients.

SURGICAL STAFF
Our surgical staff consists of experienced, certified oral and maxillofacial surgical assistants, who assist in administration of Intravenous (IV) sedation or outpatient general anesthesia in our state of the art office setting. Patients are continuously monitored during and after surgery. All are basic life support-CPR certified and Dr. Young is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life support.
PATIENT PROTECTION
In the last few years, patient protection has become an issue of public concern. With the discovery of the AIDS (HIV) virus and the medical implications of Hepatitis-C, it has become necessary for health care facilities to consistently apply state-of-the-art sterilization and disinfection techniques to provide patients with maximum protection.
In our office, your safety is our highest priority. Throughout the day, we continuously and thoroughly sterilize our equipment for your protection. Our protocol for sterilization includes the following: Before and after each patient appointment, all treatment surfaces (e.g., counter tops, chair surfaces, lights, x-ray machines, and trays) are disinfected with the most effective and safest products available.
To ensure your safety we follow a number of standard sterilization procedures with all instruments and hand-pieces. They are brought into our sterilization room and placed in an ultrasonic cleaner to remove even microscopic debris. The instruments and hand-pieces are then rinsed thoroughly before being sterilized in an autoclave, which runs for over 20 minutes at temperatures of 400-425 degrees, thereby destroying all bacteria and all viruses. Our autoclaves are monitored regularly to ensure their efficiency and safety.
Staff members use masks, safety glasses and new gloves for each patient. All staff members are updated annually in proper patient protection procedures and have been vaccinated against the Hepatitis-B virus. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding patient protection.
